A comparison of the emissivity in vacuo of barium fluoride, magnesium fluoride, and calcium fluoride with an optical pyrometer established a lowerlimit of 1340°C for the melting point of the single crystal obtained from Semi-Elements, Inc. The magnesium fluoride, purified prior to growth of the colorless, transparent crystals by the Stockbarger method, was estimated at 99.95% by Joseph V. Fisher of Semi-Elements (private communication).
