Measurement of Eye Movements by Contact Lens Techniques: Analysis of Measuring Systems and Some New Methodology For Three-Dimensional Recording

Abstract

A vector treatment for optical systems utilizing contact lenses for the measurement of eye movements is developed and used to describe some new techniques which permit measurement of three orthogonal components of ocular rotation (e.g., horizontal, vertical, torsional). Mirrors may be embedded directly in the lens at nearly any angles; no stalk is required between contact lens and mirror. Such a system has been built, using infrared beams, which permits measurement of eye movements simultaneously with visual phenomena requiring darkroom viewing. The present system resolves movements of two seconds of arc.
