Abstract
The theoretical irradiance distribution in images by Fresnel diffraction from eight different apertures is presented: parallel bounded, circular unobstructed and circular with a central obstruction of ratio=0.25, 0.5, , and circular apertures with spatial filtering (apodisation), transmittance t=[1−(ρ/ρm)2]ν−1, ν=1.5, 2, and 3. The derivation is based on Lommel’s treatment and extends the study of Linfoot and Wolf. The graphical representation of the numerical results combine the maxima–minima of irradiance in constant distances from the focal plane in curves derived by Lommel, with the contour lines of equal irradiance generally used, and add new maxima–minima of irradiance in constant distances from the optical axis. The general arrangement of the distribution of irradiance is shown. The irradiance distributions are briefly discussed.
