Abstract
The behavior of the hypersonic Debye waves has been investigated in three viscous liquids by means of the Brillouin effect. The three liquids investigated, glycerin, ethylene glycol, and normal octyl alcohol all give the Landau–Placzek ratio of Ic/2IB = γ − 1 at sufficiently high temperature so that viscosity has a negligible effect. It is found that the Ic/2IB ratio is a linear function of viscosity for viscosities below a few poises. In glycerin, however, measurements were made for a viscosity as high as 103 poises and it was found that the attenuation of the Debye waves increased very slowly when the viscosity was increased from 2.5 poises to 103 poises.
