Abstract

The traditional classical theory of coherence is discussed with particular emphasis on the distinction between narrowband coherent and incoherent sources. The significance of this difference is discussed in terms of conventional classical optics experiments. The interpretation of measured quantities and the role of the detector response in these observations are considered.
