Interpretation of the Infrared Optical Constants of Metals

Abstract

The measured infrared optical properties of 25 metals are discussed on the basis of their representation in the complex impedance diagram. This plane is especially sensitive both for intercomparison of experimental results and correlation with theory. The measurements cannot be explained either by the classical free-electron theory, or the anomalous skin effect theories, unless the relaxation time is frequency dependent. Values of the electronic parameters derived from the optical measurements are tabulated.
