Abstract
The pressure dependence of the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices of ADP, KDP, CaMoO4, CaWO4, and rutile has been studied under hydrostatic conditions to 7 kbars using an interferometric method. The refractive indices for 5893 Å in all cases were found to be linearly dependent upon both the applied stress and the volume strain. The index for the extraordinary ray of rutile decreased with pressure while all the other indices increased. The results are compared with available photoelastic data and interpreted according to Mueller’s theory of photoelasticity.
