Abstract

The generation of optical pulses having time durations possibly approaching 10−13 sec but definitely in the 10−12 sec range has kindled interest in wide-band optical amplifiers. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate that the stagger-tuning principle often utilized for obtaining greater bandwidths in the rf or microwave portion of the electromagnetic spectrum can also be utilized to obtain greater bandwidths in the optical spectrum.
