Reduction-plus-Sulfur Sensitization and Latent-Image Formation in a Model AgBr Dispersion

Abstract

Gold bathing of coatings of reduction-sensitized or reduction-plus-sulfur-sensitized AgBr grains produces fog after development. If phenosafranine is adsorbed to the grains, latent-image formation is prevented; exposure then eliminates the fog for either type of sensitization. We conclude that reduction-sensitizer centers trap holes, silver-sulfide centers trap electrons but not holes, and phenosafranine molecules trap electrons.
