Absorption spectra of 0.2% Gd:LaF3 have been measured for the transitions to 6P7/2, 6P5/2, and all 6I groups. A crystal-field analysis based on presumed hexagonal site symmetry gives B20= 106 cm-1, B40= 234 cm-1, B60= 124 cm-1, and B66= 850 cm-1, in the Stevens normalization.
