Abstract

Absorption spectra of 0.2% Gd:LaF<sub>3</sub> have been measured for the transitions to <sup>6</sup><i>P</i><sub>7/2</sub>, <sup>6</sup><i>P</i><sub>5/2</sub>, and all <sup>6</sup><i>I</i> groups. A crystal-field analysis based on presumed hexagonal site symmetry gives <i>B</i><sub>2</sub><sup>0</sup>= 106 cm<sup>-1</sup>, <i>B</i><sub>4</sub><sup>0</sup>= 234 cm<sup>-1</sup>, <i>B</i><sub>6</sub><sup>0</sup>= 124 cm<sup>-1</sup>, and <i>B</i><sub>6</sub><sup>6</sup>= 850 cm<sup>-1</sup>, in the Stevens normalization.
