Fiber Optics. XIII. Mode Detection and Discrimination in Optical Waveguides and Resonators

Abstract

A new diagnostic technique permitting the measurement of the relative power in several modes propagating simultaneously on optical waveguides and resonators is suggested. It is evaluated theoretically for circular-cylinder dielectric waveguides (optical fibers), where it is seen to provide high discrimination between modes far from cutoff. Experiments with HE1,1 and HE1,2 modes confirm the applicability of the method.
