We have measured the differential Stark shift in the 6<i>s</i>6<i>p</i>3<i>P</i>1 state of mercury. The technique we used was to measure the shift in the magnetic-field level crossing in 199Hg when an additional electric field was applied. We obtained the value <i>E</i>(<i>mJ</i>=±1) - <i>E</i>(<i>mJ</i>=0) =-2.367±0.024 kHz/(kV/cm)2. ∊2, where ∊ is the electric field.
