Abstract

Chemiluminescence intensity from the O/NO gas-phase reaction and from luminol (3-aminophthalhydrazide) oxidation in the liquid phase have been measured under the same conditions of geometry, optics, and detection over the wavelength range 440–530 nm. The measurements show that the rate constant for O/NO emission, measured by Fontijn, Meyer, and Schiff, and the luminol chemiluminescence quantum yield, obtained by Lee and Seliger, lead to monochromator-photomultiplier calibrations that agree within a factor of 1.09±0.40. The correction factors for refraction and light trapping that have to be considered when comparing liquid- to gas-phase luminescence intensities are briefly discussed.
