Abstract

The aberration coefficients of a thin double-plane symmetric field lens are derived. The nonvanishing coefficients govern curvature of field and distortion. The coefficients of curvature of field are determined by the powers and refractive index of the lens, whereas, given the powers, those of distortion depend linearly on the curvatures of one surface of the lens. A thin field lens affords complete control of field curvature and distortion only in a symmetric optical system.
