Simple lens-system models for holographic techniques

Abstract

A very simple lens-system model of a hologram is proposed for gaining an intuitive understanding of certain well-known holographic techniques. The model applies to planar (not volume) holograms whose complex amplitude transmittances are proportional to photographic exposure; the reference and reconstruction illumination can consist of either plane or spherical waves. The techniques of scaling (i.e., enlarging or reducing) the hologram and reconstructing at a new wavelength are easily taken into account. The model consists of only two lenses, an aperture, and a possibly modified version of the object, yet it yields a complete first-order description of the primary and conjugate images.
