Multiple scattering: Theoretical calculations compared with experimental dye-laser measurements

Abstract

Multiple-scattering calculations (for scattering angle θ = 90°) including single, double, triple, and fourth orders of scattering are compared with laboratory dye-laser scattering data as functions of wavelength. The experimental results show good agreement with the theoretical calculations, thus supporting the theoretical model. Up to an optical depth of ~1.8, the fourth order of scattering is negligible. The double-scattering curve vs wavelength contains fluctuations with maximal values in the same regions as the corresponding single-scattering curve. The triple-scattering flux does not vary significantly as a function of wavelength; its fluctuations do not correspond directly to the fluctuations in the single scattering curve. The sum of all orders of scattering for an optical depth of ~1.8 causes the regions of maxima to remain pronounced although they are relatively reduced.
