Abstract
The rod contribution in large-field color matches can be equalized on both sides of the field by adding a fourth stimulus to the usual three of colorimetry. However, if a violet test stimulus is included, the Maxwell spot can be seen, and can cause large departures from Grassmann’s laws. Thus tetrachromatic matching does not solve the problem of nonadditivity in large-field colorimetry.
