Abstract
A nonlinear function, log*(x), is defined, which has some useful properties when applied to data from color-matching experiments. The function is linear near zero, logarithmic far from zero, and passes smoothly through zero, retaining the sign of the original data. Error bars tend to be equalized in size on the transformed scale, and small but significant deviations from zero can be clearly displayed.
