Abstract

Time-resolved spectroscopy is used to observe the 4p 5P → 3s 5S, 4p 3P → 3s 3S, and 4d 5D → 3p 5P multiplet transitions of the O i spectrum occurring at λ = 3947, 4368, and 6157 Å, respectively. The excited atomic states are produced through dissociative excitation of an O2 target gas by a pulsed electron beam of ~0.5–2-μsec pulse width and 100-eV incident energy. The mean radiative lifetimes of the 4p 5P, 4p 3P, and 4d 5D multiplets are obtained from analysis of the resulting radiative decay over the pressure range ~20–100 mTorr and are reported as 194, 161, and 95 nsec, respectively. The corresponding collisional deactivation cross sections for the multiplets are also obtained from the lifetime-versus-pressure measurements and are reported as 3.2 × 10−15, 7.7 × 10−15, and 1.6 × 10−15 cm2, respectively.
