Radial mode-number shift of graded-index optical-fiber modes

Abstract

The basic concept of mode-number shift has been developed for evaluating the effects of cladding on propagation in cladded inhomogeneous waveguides and is known to hold true for both TE and TM modes in planar waveguides and for scalar modes in graded-index cylindrical waveguides. We show that this concept may be extended to vector modes in graded-index cylindrical waveguides (optical fibers). The equivalent amount of mode-number shift in this case is represented in a simple form that permits the polarization effects of cladding on guided propagation to be evaluated from the results of an uncladded optical-fiber analysis.
