Abstract

A higher-order analysis of broad-source fringe formation in the Mach-Zehnder interferometer and its diffraction-grating counterpart is carried out. The results are considerably different for the two cases, with the grating interferometer being much more favorable. Broad-spectrum effects are also considered.
