Abstract

We describe the transmission characteristics of periodic magneto-optical and dielectric multilayer films under a variable magnetic field. The transmission characteristics of the films vary, depending on the magnetically induced permittivity in the magneto-optical layer. The films transmit or reflect light according to whether the magnetic field is on or off, which means that they work as an optical switch driven by the magnetic field. The transmittance and the Faraday rotation of the films depend on the magnetization, which indicates that the films operate as magnetic-field sensors.
