Abstract

Although the recently proposed theory of multilayer gratings by Preist et al. [ J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 12, 1740 ( 1995)] is capable of generating reliable numerical results in many practical cases, its formulation implies the Rayleigh hypothesis in a generalized sense. For the case in which the groove depth of the upper boundary of a corrugated layer is comparable to the grating period and much greater than the groove depth of the lower boundary, their theory is, in general, invalid.
