Abstract

The evolution of surface and leaky waves as a function of frequency is examined for parallel polarization [transversemagnetic (TM) modes] in configurations consisting of a layer bounded by media having different dielectric constants. We find that TM surface waves behave similarly to those for transverse-electric (TE) modes reported by Hsue and Tamir [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 1, 923 (1984)]. However, TM leaky waves exist in six different types, in contrast to TE leaky waves, which are limited to four types. The presence of the novel types of leaky wave for TM polarization can be related to conditions of the Brewster kind, which are absent in the case of TE polarization.
