Abstract

We analyze in detail the contribution of layers with indices lower than the cutoff value of βc/k0 on the mode number in a general multilayer slab waveguide. The formulas are obtained to calculate the number of confined modes in the waveguide and are applied to four-layer and W-structure waveguides.
