Abstract
To extend the degree of freedom for designing polarization-maintaining fibers, a stress-applied fiber with a graded-core profile is proposed. An α-power refractive-index profile is assumed in the core, and the refractive-index depression in the stress-applying parts (SAP’s) is considered. The refractive-index profile and the normalized SAP distance are selected as parameters, and the polarization-mode properties of the fiber are analyzed numerically Through the results obtained, it is found that absolutely single-polarization operation can be realized in stress-applied fibers by properly tailoring the refractive-index profile in the core.
