Abstract

For given statistics of optical disturbance, the minimal error of wave-front reconstruction is a function of sensor aperture weighting. By minimizing the reconstruction error with respect to sensor aperture weighting, we obtain a defining equation for the optimal observation aperture. In this paper we examine the optimal-observation-aperture problem for a turbulence-distorted wave front, with and without a constraint of nonoverlapping subapertures. In the one- and two-dimensional examples studied, the performance of the optimal system is compared with that of conventional Hartmann-type sensors with optimal reconstruction.
