Abstract

In a previous paper [ J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 6, 532 ( 1989)], a simple formula for representing the surface current density generated by an incident beam illuminating a two-dimensional deterministic perfectly conducting rough surface was drawn from elementary calculations. This formula can be considered a correction of the physical-optics approximation (Kirchhoff hypothesis), with the radius of curvature of the surface taken into account. We show that this correction can be improved by considering the successive derivatives of the function describing the profile. We extend our new formalism to metallic or dielectric surfaces. It is shown from comparisons with rigorous results on circular cylinders and diffraction gratings that the precision of our method is much better, by far, than that given by the Kirchhoff approximation.
