Abstract

We describe the factors important in the design and the performance of femtosecond optical parametric oscillators. Resonator design, oscillation threshold, choice of nonlinear material, and signal output pulse duration are discussed. A detailed comparative analysis of KTiOPO4 and its crystal isomorphs with regard to applications in femtosecond optical parametric oscillators is given, and the experimental performance of oscillators based on KTiOPO4 and RbTiOAsO4 is compared.
