Mutually pumped coherent oscillator in photorefractive crystals with a local nonlinear response

Abstract

Generation of two collimated light waves in a crystal (LiNbO3:Fe) with a local nonlinear response in an optical arrangement similar to that of a double phase-conjugate mirror is described. The frequency of the generated oscillation waves is detuned compared with the frequency of the pump waves, and the direction of propagation of the oscillations is not exactly backward with respect to that of the pump waves. Both of these observations are in agreement with calculations of the threshold of oscillation in media with a local nonlinear response. It is also shown that two pumps with different frequencies can be used to compensate for the angular deviation of one of the two oscillation waves from the exact backward direction.
