Abstract
The effect of optical breakdown on the reflection of focused beam stimulated Brillouin backscattering (SBS) cells is studied theoretically. The threshold for SBS is inversely proportional to the breakdown intensity and the square of the stationary Brillouin gain coefficient if the threshold for optical breakdown is low. Two values of the steady-state reflectance are possible if optical breakdown and SBS have approximately the same threshold.
