Abstract

We report the observation and characterization of optical switching in a metal–semiconductor–metal waveguide structure. The advantages of metal gratings combined with the proven success of silicon optoelectronics technology allow this structure to add a new dimension to the realization of VLSI-compatible optical switches. A silicon-on-insulator substrate with aluminum interdigitated fingers deposited on the surface and overcoated with amorphous silicon provided both input coupling and switching of Nd:YAG laser pulses.
