Abstract

We study the peculiar features of the transmission of an intense ultrashort light pulse through the boundary between vacuum and a solid sample under conditions of tunneling ionization. We are especially interested in the case when ionization changes the sign of the plasma dielectric function from positive to negative, which may result in strong reflection of the incident pulse. We also discuss the influence of this reflection on the high-harmonic spectrum caused by the plasma creation. We use the integral form of the exact wave equation, which is more convenient when one is describing problems of nonlinear transient reflection.
