Servo control of amplitude modulation in frequency-modulation spectroscopy: demonstration of shot-noise-limited detection

Abstract

We describe and demonstrate a new method to reduce actively the amplitude modulation of a phase-modulated laser to the shot-noise limit. This theoretical limit of ultrahigh sensitivity of FM spectroscopy is achieved in a linear absorption experiment with iodine.
