Abstract

The average transverse dynamics of an electron beam in an autoresonant laser is studied. It is shown that, in the given external electromagnetic wave approximation (small-gain free-electron laser), the transverse emittance of a beam of charged particles decreases. The discovered effect can be used for cooling of charged-particle beams in various accelerators. In the field of particle energy, ∼100 mass energy units in the beam energy loss is negligible. This method of charged-beam cooling can be applied to electron, muon, and various heavy-particle beams.
