Abstract

The effects of the drive laser intensity, pulse duration, and pulse configuration on the performance of the Ni-like Sn x-ray laser at 12.0 nm (4d4p, J=01) are investigated with use of a one-dimensional hydrodynamic code coupled with an atomic physics code. High gain operation is predicted for the optimized drive pulse configuration. The effects of refraction and saturation on the propagation of the x-ray laser in the plasma medium are also investigated by use of a two-dimensional ray-tracing code. The results show that the refraction plays an important role. The saturated output with an effective gain product length of 17.88 can be obtained for an ∼0.40-cm-long plasma column by use of optimized parameters.
