Abstract

A photonic-crystal fiber (PCF) is used to demonstrate a fiber-optic format of efficient third-harmonic generation through a 3 ω = 2 ω + 2 ω ω parametric four-wave mixing, involving 1.24 μ m radiation of a femtosecond Cr:forsterite laser ( ω ) and its second-harmonic output ( 2 ω ) . The frequency of the 3 ω fiber output is tuned within the range of wavelengths from 407 to 433 nm by changing the peak power of the 1.24 μ m input laser pulses through cross-phase-modulation-induced instability. The 3 ω field is shown to play a significant role in supercontinuum generation in a PCF, substantially enhancing the short-wavelength part of the supercontinuum spectrum.
