Characterization of low-threshold polymer microring lasers using optical microscopy and spectral analysis

Abstract

Low-threshold microcavity lasing is demonstrated in a dye-doped polymer microring operating in the blue–green spectral region. The emission spectrum observed is not the evenly spaced multimode spectrum that is expected from a microring laser. Microscopy and spectral analysis are used to characterize the emission properties of the devices, and it is demonstrated that the dominant mode in the laser is that of the lowest-order radial mode in the polymer layer. The unusual spectral characteristics exhibited by the microrings are discussed in terms of an interaction between different sets of modes supported by the device structure.
