The use of the surface-area ratio is appropriate for cases in which the rupture initiating defects occur at the surfaces in both the flexure samples and the component: this appears to be the case for both our flexure tests and the large slab laser. For components in which edge or volume defects initiate failure the appropriate ratios are the edge length and the volume, respectively.
