Abstract
We present an analysis of the phase behavior of the second-subharmonic signal generated by an optical parametric oscillator or amplifier. Two phase-matching conditions are considered. We show that for type-I phase matching there exist two stabilized values of the second-subharmonic phase, which differ simply by π. This property is of interest for optical phase stabilization and digital phase locking. Conditions for phase stabilization and bistability of higher-order subharmonics are presented.
