Abstract
The laser rate equations with a term describing a saturable absorber and a modulated pump source are investigated in a broad range of parameters. The main feature of this model is frequency locking and quasi-periodicity. Small parameter regions exist where period doubling to chaos occurs. Winding numbers and Lyapunov exponent diagrams are given for this case. The dynamics of this laser model resembles the van der Pol oscillator. A transformation yields a van der Pol-like equation with a Toda-like potential.
