Abstract
Nonexponential decay of the 2E level of Ti: Al2O3 at 300 K is reported for the first time to the authors’ knowledge. A decay time of 5.5 μsec at 15 μsec after excitation was observed in Ti:Al2O3 samples prepared by different growth methods as compared with 3.2 μsec observed initially. Correlations of the nonexponential decay characteristics with the laser figure of merit and crystal homogeneity are presented. A simple and nondestructive crystal diagnostic method is proposed.
