Attenuation of optical waves in nonlinear thin films on metal substrates

Abstract

The attenuation of nonlinear guided TE and TM waves in a waveguide consisting of a thin nonlinear film on a metal substrate is investigated. The variation of the attenuation with guided power is determined for films with positive and negative nonlinearities. The effects of saturation of the dielectric constant of the film are also studied and contrasted with cases in which the film is characterized by a Kerr-like nonlinearity.
