Abstract
Through modification of the coupled-wave equation for three-wave mixing optical parametric amplification, the influence of the spectral properties of the pump radiation is investigated theoretically. It is shown that the gain is larger when the pump power is distributed among several laser cavity modes as compared with that for a single-mode case with the same power and otherwise identical conditions. However, sidebands close to the carrier frequency are created in the amplification process, and this development causes problems for on-line applications in fiber communication systems. The carrier-to-sideband ratio is evaluated and shown to be significantly degraded when the gain is large enough.
