Abstract
In this paper radiative cooling as a mechanism for generating soft-x-ray population inversion and gain on the 182-Å 3–2 line in C5+ is examined theoretically. A set of rate equations is used to investigate the temporal evaluation of pure-carbon plasmas and carbon plasmas seeded with aluminum as a radiative coolant. In contrast to the results of previous work, relatively low gain is found for the pure-carbon case. The addition of aluminum is shown to increase significantly both the electron cooling rate and the calculated gain on the C vi 182-Å line. The results are compared with those obtained by replacing the aluminum with an idealized coolant.
