Abstract
The formation of sharp pulses from phase-modulated optical-fiber-guided cw signals in the presence of stimulated Brillouin scattering is studied. Analysis and computer simulations show how the peak amplitude of the pulses (i) increases with increasing magnitude of the phase shifts and (ii) decreases with increasing rise time of the phase shifts. The possibility of converting phase-modulated cw signals into pedestal-free pulses is also discussed.
