Abstract

Emission from I(2P1/2) at 1.315 μm was used to demonstrate resonant energy transfer between NCl(a1Δ) and I(2P3/2). The NCl(a1Δ) was produced by the reaction of excess Cl with HN3. A rate constant for quenching of NCl(a1Δ) by I(2P3/2) was found to be greater than 1 × 10−10 cm3 s−1. This nearly gas kinetic rate is interpreted as evidence of an efficient near-resonant energy transfer process: NCl(a1Δ, v = 0) + I(2P3/2) → NCl(X3∑, v = 2) + I(2P1/2).
