Optical properties of metal-dielectric coatings with a layered structure

Abstract

This paper presents the results of experimental investigations of the optical properties of metal-dielectric coatings consisting of alternating close-packed monolayers of silver nanoparticles and sub-wave continuous KCl films. Coatings with a structure of quasi-one-dimensional photonic crystals were created by thermal evaporation in vacuum. The photonic band gap formed by multiray interference is located in the same spectral range where the surface modes for the Ag nanoparticles appear. A discussion is given of the features of the transmission and reflection spectra of layered-periodic nanocomposites of this sort in the visible region, determined by the joint appearance of electronic and photon limitation. © 2004 Optical Society of America
