Abstract

The population of the metastable level of erbium in ytterbium-erbium phosphate glasses has been measured as a function of the concentration of ytterbium ions and the power of the laser pumping. The ytterbium concentration was varied from 0 to a limiting value of 52.4×1020cm−3. It is established that increasing the concentration of ytterbium ions causes the population inversion of erbium to increase.
