Developing video spectroradiometer-gas-viewers for determining the spatial distribution of anthropogenic gases in the near-earth atmosphere and the results of a full-scale experiment

Abstract

This paper systematizes the results of work on substantiating the construction principles and the necessary characteristics of video spectroradiometer-gas viewers for determining the spatial distribution of anthropogenic gases in the near-earth layer of the atmosphere from satellites, aircraft, and the earth, using as examples devices for recording NO<sub>2</sub> and SO<sub>2</sub>. The results are given of a field experiment for estimating the nitrogen dioxide concentration in the emission plume from the chimney of a central heat and power station, based on recording the radiation in the 434-448-nm electronic band of the absorption spectrum of NO<sub>2</sub>, using a digital video spectroradiometer-gas viewer. The data-processing technique makes it possible to discriminate the nitrogen dioxide concentration in a plume that is not observable visually on the background of the radiation scattered by the atmosphere in the 17.8×23.2° field of view of the device.
